Springfield Farm Shop – Coffee with a view!

  • 2 min read

Michael Tucker can trace back 6 generations of his family to 1710, who have farmed in East Prawle. There is a definite passion for growing, rearing and producing quality goods for all to enjoy in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Not content with just farming, Michael and his family have recently opened Springfield Farm Shop and Tearoom, East Charleton, in an amazing setting with beautiful views of the estuary.

Michael must have got the retail bug from his great-grandparents, who used to run a shop in Dartmouth in the early 1900’s, at No2 Smith Street. They too were passionate about sourcing locally grown food and drink and wanted to make more of their farm produce. Setting off from East Prawle at 4 am for the four-hour horse and cart journey to Dartmouth, three times a week, they would stop along the route to collect other goods from their neighbours and fellow farmers to sell on their behalf in the shop. Great Granny used to pluck the chickens in the cart to save valuable selling time when they got to Dartmouth and you knew if you had missed them because you would see the feathers on the track…

The farm shop sells fresh seasonal fruit and veg, grown on the farm where possible, along with locally sourced cheese, eggs, milk, fresh bread, gluten-free products, local beers and wines, cereals and much, much more! Michael is keen to only sell local produce from around Devon and to showcase the amazing array of food and drink on offer in the county. They are also delighted to have acquired Countryman’s Butchers, and Andy the butcher will be selling meat at affordable prices. The pork, beef and lamb are all reared on the farm, so no food miles here!

The vintage tea room is being run by Claire and is open for breakfast, brunch and lunch, selling freshly baked homemade treats to enjoy with a pot of tea or an Owens coffee! They offer a breakfast menu, with bacon or sausage baps, scrambled eggs and beans on toast, plus delicious sandwiches and daily specials at lunchtime, or if visiting in the afternoon, why not enjoy a cream tea (or coffee!)

There is outdoor seating with beautiful views for the warmer weather, and dogs are welcomed here (sorry dogs not allowed inside the shop or tearoom). Before you enjoy a shop, why not walk down the path to the estuary, where you will enjoy the breathtaking scenery. You can have some well-earned refreshment afterwards in the tea room!

Tell us all about your visit, and what delights you have cooked with the amazing produce available!
