Las Damas - Peru
Soil Association Certification's Best of Organic Market UK (BOOM) Awards 23 Finalist
Our Las Damas Peru Coffee (previously named Tunki)
Proudly continuing to support the Café Femenino programme, this is the first in our new 'Las Damas' range of coffees, celebrating women in coffee.
This particular coffee is the same high-quality, organic, Fairtrade coffee you’ve enjoyed as Tunki, but with a renewed purpose.
It comes from the same Peruvian cooperative you already know and love, but it also highlights the incredible work of a co-operative focused on supporting female coffee farmers. Indeed, the women of the CECANOR cooperative are proud to be the originators of the Café Femenino concept and continue to "feel proud to instill in their daughters the expectation that they will grow up to become leaders in their community—just like their mothers and grandmothers."
By transitioning the name from Tunki to Las Damas, we’re proud to shine a light on gender equity in coffee farming - while still bringing you the rich, distinctive flavour and quality you expect from Owens Coffee.
Thousands of women with one powerful idea: Women farmers deserve credit for their crucial role in the coffee industry so Café Femenino provides direct compensation to women farmers.
The Café Femenino coffee program is one-of-a-kind ethical sourcing model committed to ending the cycle of poverty affecting women coffee farmers across the world.
This is a direct result of women in remote and rural coffee communities facing a host of challenges that keep them trapped in poverty. Many of these isolated women live in male-dominated societies and have very little financial control or decision-making power.
In 2004, 464 female coffee producers in Peru united to change this dynamic and take a step toward empowerment, deciding to separate their coffee production from men to gain visibility and a voice inside their community, along with the opportunity and resources to enact positive change in their communities and on their own terms. The women of CECANOR are proud to be the originators of the Café Femenino concept. Now, they feel proud to instill in their daughters the expectation that they will grow up to become leaders in their community—just like their mothers and grandmothers.
Working in partnership with their commercial partner Organic Products Trading Company (OPTCO), they developed a never-before-existing market for women-produced coffee to serve as an important vehicle for social change and the empowerment of poor, marginalized women coffee farmers.
For many it would be the first time they would have created their own product and income and so, not surprisingly the Café Femenino movement has grown since 2004 and now includes thousands of women farmers from nine countries across the world, continuing to grow as more and more women join the Café Femenino movement.
Since their first meeting in 2004, the women of the Café Femenino Peru Program have marshaled widespread social change into their communities. By overcoming a variety of barriers— including inferior societal status due to gender prejudice, adverse living conditions, and lack of self-esteem stemming from insecurities about their lack of formal education—the women have successfully stood up against generations of gender inequity.
This is exactly why we want to shine the shine a light on gender equity in coffee farming - while still bringing you the quality and ethics you expect from Owens Coffee, matched by the convenience and reliability of our organic coffee subscriptions.
We know you'll love it as much as we all do here are Owens HQ and here's to equality in the fields, coffee washing stations and beyond.
