Jabulani Rwanda - Organic & Fairtrade Single Origin

Jabulani is our directly-sourced coffee grown in the Gakenke District of Rwanda and offers sweet notes of cherry, hibiscus and vanilla that is perfect no matter how you brew, thanks to the coffee's quality, complexity and personality. The UK's Best of Organic Coffee*, Jabulani is an organic, specialty coffee with purpose! Behind Jabulani is a story of togetherness and a vision for improving communities and developing leadership.

Jabulani is grown in the Gakenke District of Rwanda. The coffee offers sweet notes of cherry, hibiscus and vanilla. These specialty grade beans reached a cupping score of 84 in 2022. We recommend Jabulani for both filter and espresso.

In 2022, we visited the cooperative where the coffee beans are grown. A short, 26-minute documentary about the coffee cooperative, Rwanda and the journey of Jabulani was created. That documentary is now available. To watch it, and to learn more about the coffee and the incredible people and powerful story behind it, go to the 'Learn More' section below.

Jabulani is an organic specialty coffee with purpose, whose story goes beyond the bean, as shown in the documentary shown below.

The Rwandan single origin coffee has been produced as the result of a partnership between Owens Coffee, Jabo Butera of the Diversity Business Incubator (DBI) in Plymouth, an business hub supporting minority ethnic entrepreneurs in and around Plymouth's Jabulani Food Court, run by Jabo and Liliane Uwimana.

One of the most beautiful founding principles of the cooperative where it is grown is the saying "I am excited for my future, therefore I am happy." This summarises the story of togetherness and a vision for improving communities and developing leadership, with Jabulani coffee at its heart.

Discover more about our Rwandan Jabulani Coffee

Jabulani coffee beans are mainly grown by smallholders who own land less than one hectare per family.

This organic single origin coffee is produced by the Twongerekawa Coko Cooperative, run by a female president who has united a group of over 200 members growing their coffee at unusually high levels (2000m above sea level), so the beans are slowly ripened and full of flavour.

The Coko Cooperative is a small, mostly female cooperative based in Northern Rwanda and found in the highest areas of the Gakenke District. These females are celebrated community leaders; supporting them supports their communities.

Owens, Jabo and Liliane have a direct relationship with the Twongerekawa Coko Cooperative. Sales of the beans support initiatives both in Rwanda and in the UK, helping to connect ambassadors from both countries to exchange knowledge, nurture leadership and encourage positive global change.
