Frontera San Ignacio (COOPAFSI) – Peru

At Owens, every cup starts with people. Our coffee is grown by dedicated farmers and cooperatives around the world, whose care and expertise bring out the rich flavours in every roast. By choosing 100% organic, specialty and Fairtrade beans, we support better livelihoods for farming communities — so when you meet our farmers, you’re also meeting the heart of our coffee.

Cooperativa Agraria Frontera San Ignacio — COOPAFSI — is a long-established farmers’ co-operative in the Cajamarca region of northern Peru, bringing together sixteen producer committees across the districts of San Ignacio, La Coipa, Huarango, and Tabaconas. Founded in 1968, it is one of the oldest and most respected coffee co-operatives in Peru, and one whose values — community, sustainability, and quality — have only grown stronger over the decades. The farmers of COOPAFSI grow Organic and Fairtrade-certified Arabica in the buffer zones of a protected natural area, where organic farming is both a certification and a way of life, encouraging the protection of wildlife and species that share this extraordinary landscape.

Northern Peru’s Cajamarca region is one of the most biodiverse growing areas in South America. Situated in the foothills of the Andes, the farms of COOPAFSI sit at elevations between 1,000 and 1,800 metres above sea level, surrounded by cloud forest and protected natural areas that make organic farming not just a choice, but a responsibility. Working here without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers is both a practical and a philosophical commitment — one that protects the forests, the wildlife, and the quality of the coffee.

The co-operative’s purpose is straightforward: to help smallholder farmers grow exceptional coffee, sell it at a fair price, and build the kind of stable, resilient livelihoods that sustain families and communities for generations. It provides members with technical agricultural training, health funds, a micro-credit facility, and access to community development resources — services that make a genuine difference in a region where access to finance and support can determine whether a farm survives.

The result is a washed Arabica that reflects the care of the people who grow it — balanced, honest, and full of character.
