Ketiara is a women-led cooperative in Aceh, northern Sumatra, with more than 2,000 members spread across 19 villages. Founded in 2008 and led by Rahmah Ketiara, the group has built a reputation for quality, fairness, and community empowerment. Their Hutan coffee is a special initiative created with DR Wakefield to protect the surrounding forests while supporting farming families. Seventy percent of contributing households are women-led, and the project funds the planting of both hardwoods for forest conservation and fruit trees such as avocado, banana, and durian that provide additional income for growers.
Hutan’s flavour profile is carefully maintained through selective harvesting and blending of lots from the Bies, Gegarang, Jagong, and Bintang areas. Red cherries are picked by hand, fermented, washed, and then processed using traditional wet-hulling known locally as giling basah. This method is unique to Sumatra and imparts depth and richness. The result is a coffee that balances body and sweetness, offering layers of chocolate, brown sugar, and berry notes with bright touches of pineapple and lemongrass. This combination of care, tradition, and innovation makes Hutan both distinctive and dependable in the cup.
