Luxury Lewtrenchard Manor on Dartmoor, Gold Award winner at the Devon Tourism Awards 2016
It is safe to say I have stayed in quite a few hotels in my time, and one gem that I absolutely love is Lewtrenchard Manor, situated on the edge of Dartmoor, this is a beautiful and luxurious country house. With roaring log fires in the winter, and beautiful gardens with an Italian style courtyard in the summer, it is a superb spot to visit, and I remember my stay fondly with a sumptuous bed and an amazing breakfast.
Interesting fact: It was once the home of Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould, a Anglican priest and novelist remembered particularly as a writer of hymns. The best known being ‘Onward Christian Soldiers’ and ‘Now the Day is Over’. The estate is still in the family and owned by Sabine’s Great Granddaughter, Merriol Almond and the hotel is leased and run by James, Sue and Duncan Murray.
Head Chef, Matthew Peryer has been there for four years, previously from The Atlantic Hotel, Jersey. Matthew’s signature dishes would include ‘Vulscombe Goats Cheese Pave, Garden Beetroot, Candied Walnuts’ and ‘Citrus Roasted Fillets of Lemon Sole, Crab Crushed Jersey Royals, Brown Shrimp’. Plus of course, they serve our very own Owens coffee, so really you can pop in just about anytime, to stay, have a meal, or afternoon tea (or coffee!). There are miles of fabulous walks on Dartmoor, and the staff at Lewtrenchard will be only too pleased to recommend which direction to go. You could even hum a hymn as you walk!
Another great place to visit for an Owens cup of coffee!
