South Sands Hotel, Salcombe, a contemporary hideaway

  • 2 min read

Recommended by the Hotel Guru as one of the best hotels in Devon, and with 2 AA rosettes for culinary excellence, the South Sands occupies an idyllic spot in Salcombe, and is a great place to visit, whether for coffee (Owens obviously), lunch, dinner or longer.

Salcombe is a coastal town, and is situated in the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It was once a major port for the fruit trade and, over the years, has found fame as a safe haven for family holidays and visiting yachtsmen. The hotel was built on the beach around 1950, and whilst it may not be the oldest property in the South Hams, it is a perfect holiday hideaway in a fantastic location. South Sands is a contemporary, boutique hotel, with beautiful rooms, stunning views, and an amazing restaurant. It is dog friendly too, so there is no excuse not to visit with your furry friend. If the beautiful beach is not enough for you, the area has some breathtaking walks along the coastline. Overbecks, a National Trust property, is a hidden paradise of subtropical gardens and eclectic collections, and just a short walk from the hotel.

The South Sands ferry runs from here, and you catch it by getting on a sea tractor, which is right next door to the hotel! In fact we have Captain Morgan’s (where the ferry lands) to thank for South Sands hotel serving Owens Coffee, because of our success there, South Sands decided to use us too! Explore Salcombe, then head back to the hotel for an ‘Owens’ Baya Espresso Martini, and relax on the large terrace. Then later, after sampling the superb local meat, fish and foraged products that are always on the menu, try the hotel’s famous Salcombe Gin Soup for your desert.

There are Monthly Wine Suppers, with 5 courses accompanied by 5 wines for just £65 pp, and the set lunch menu is just £14.95 for 2 courses or £19.95 for 3. Amazing value. Finish this off with an Owens coffee and soak in the atmosphere. Look out for the Fine Wine Supper on April 20th. Definitely worth a trip.
