  • 4 min read

Owens Coffee has been crowned Best Organic Coffee in the UK at the Soil Association's BOOM Awards for a second time!

The Best Organic Coffee in the UK sub-category is an award we're very proud to win here at Owens. In 2019, our Gara Blend won the title.

The title of Best Organic Coffee falls under the category Best Organic Non-Alcoholic Drinks at the BOOM Awards.

A bestseller, Gara is bold and fruity with notes of fruit, smoke and earth, which are highlighted by its darker roast. The beans are sourced from organic coffee bean farmers in Nicaragua and Honduras.

The Soil Association is the UK’s largest organic certification body and the BOOM Awards are the only dedicated organic awards of their kind. The awards 'celebrate the best of the organic industry' and in addition to the Best Organic Coffee, categories include Best of Organic Bakery, Best of Organic Snacks, Best of Organic Meat & Poultry, Best of Organic Box Schemes, Best of Organic Food Blogger and more.

In July 2023, we attended the BOOM Awards finals at Printworks in Bristol.

The awards were attended by over 300 guests from major retailers, organic brands and industry figures who came together to celebrate the best of organic. Prizes were awarded to food and drink products judged on their taste and quality by expert panels from the industry.

The team at Owens Coffee were thrilled to have not one, but THREE of our coffees listed as finalists in the awards. As soon as we heard that these coffees were finalists at the awards, we put together our BOOM Awards Taster Pack, which includes all three finalists plus a guide on 'How to Taste Coffee like a Professional'.

Best Organic Coffee Finalists

The pack has been really popular and our discerning customers have been tasting the three and making their own minds up about which they love the most! We take a look at each of the coffees in the notes below:

Romero - Especially for filter brewing, Romero is produced from the Romero family's single estate in Honduras. We've been purchasing this coffee from the Romero family - Deybi Omar Romero and his mother Maria Julia Albertina Moreno - for many years now. The coffee is medium roasted for a creamy body with chocolatey brown undertones. Shop Romero here.

Jabulani - Our Jabulani coffee is a collaboration between Owens Coffee and Plymouth's Diversity Business Incubator who support ethnic minority entrepreneurs in their self employment journeys. The coffee is grown at over 2000m above sea level by the mainly female cooperative in the region of Gakenke. Owens and the Diversity Business Incubator are working closely with the cooperative's female President, Therese, to build a nursery and IT centre at the cooperative HQ, with the aim of providing alternative skills to agriculture and of reducing the shocking 30%+ childhood mortality rates in the region. Jabulani makes a great espresso and filter coffee, with notes of vanilla, hibiscus and cherry. Shop Jabulani here.

Tunki - Tunki is another of our coffees especially developed for filter brewing. It is produced from beans grown on the farms of the Tambopata Valley in Peru and named after a native bird considered by many in Peru to be its national bird. Tunki is medium roasted with sweet notes of chocolate and undertones of citrus and red berries. Shop Tunki here

The judges had a huge amount of products to work their way through and they chose their favourites. At the glittering event, Jabulani was announced as the Best Organic Coffee in the UK 2023. We couldn't be more proud!

Owens Coffee founder Lorraine Bridden said ‘We are delighted here at Owens to have the team's hard work recognised and will continue to produce a fantastic quality product that is only ever 100% organic.’

Clare McDermott, Business Development Director for Soil Association Certification said, “The organic market is booming, with more people than ever looking for, talking about and choosing organic. Small steps can make a big difference in supporting our environment, and by choosing organic we are all playing our part in supporting a more sustainable food system, working with
nature to protect the soil, encourage wildlife, avoid antibiotics and reduce pesticide use.

“Organic businesses have always been innovators and pioneers, and I’m delighted that we’ve been able to celebrate some of the very best through the BOOM awards, which get bigger and better each year”.

This year's award ceremony saw organic brands, products and people recognised as the best in their field. Owens Coffee was amongst a whole range of both new and established names, which included Riverford Farm Dairies, Planet Organic, Riverford Field Kitchen, Ocado, Sainsburys and Yeo Valley

Big congratulations to all of this years' winners!
